twinkle twinkle Rattan

日本の暮らしでも馴染みあるラタンの家具や道具、ラタン素材本来の魅力をデザインできないかと考えました。美しい曲線はもちろん、あらためて断面に目を凝らすと、いくつもの道管によって形成され、それらが自由な曲げ加工を可能にしている事がわかります。そして数ミリ単位でスライスすると、針穴ほどの穴が光を透します。道管を透してみる光は、キラキラと瞬く唯一無二の輝きを放ち、慣れ親しんだラタンの新たな魅力に出逢います。これまで当たり前に身の回りにあった素材や技術を現代の視点で見つめ直すことで、素材の新しい魅力に出逢えます。それらが新しい価値となり、私たちの暮らしをより豊かにすることでしょう。

In exploring the familiar presence of rattan furniture and objects in Japanese living, this work seeks to rediscover and reinterpret the material’s inherent beauty. Beyond its graceful curves, a closer look at its cross-section reveals a structure formed by multiple vascular bundles, enabling remarkable flexibility in bending. When sliced into millimetre-thin layers, needle-sized pores shimmer with passing light, emitting a uniquely sparkling glow. By re-examining materials and techniques long embedded in our everyday lives through a contemporary lens, we uncover new aesthetic qualities. These rediscoveries have the potential to evolve into new values, enriching the way we live.
